Budapest Metro Museum at Deák tér will again take part in Hungary’s Museum Night programme on June 20, offering visitors access to exhibitions on Budapest’s underground railway history and a new temporary display titled “Stories from Budapest.”

The museum is located in the underground passage at Deák Ferenc Square, is operated by BKV, and focuses on the history of public transport in the Hungarian capital. Its central location also makes it a convenient starting point for visitors planning to attend Museum Night venues across Budapest.

Entry is available with the Museum Night wristband⁠, which is valid at more than 200 participating locations in the city. The wristband can be purchased in advance or on the day of the event, including directly at the museum.

Underground Railway Museum at Deák tér

The Underground Railway Museum⁠ is located in a former tunnel section, so the exhibition space itself forms part of Budapest’s public transport history.

Its exhibition presents more than a century of urban mobility in the capital through historic vehicles, archive photographs, documents, and scale models. A central focus is Budapest’s first metro line, known in Hungarian as kisföldalatti, or “the little subway.”

The line is regarded as the first underground metro system on the European continent, making it one of the main historical subjects presented by the museum.

“Stories from Budapest” Exhibition

The museum also prepares temporary exhibitions for visitors each year. In early June, it opened this year’s exhibition, “Stories from Budapest,” which focuses on lesser-known chapters in the city’s public transport history.

Topics include the horse-drawn vehicles once used on Budapest streets, the way tram routes were identified before numbers were introduced, when the first women appeared in the capital’s public transport system, and the reason trolleybus route numbers begin with the 70 series.

Museum Night Hours and MU Routes

During Museum Night on June 20, the Underground Railway Museum will be open from 6:00 PM until 11:45 PM. The final admission will be at 11:30 PM.

Context

For visitors planning the evening, the Museum Night wristband is also the main practical access document for Budapest venues. According to the official event FAQ, an adult wristband in Budapest costs HUF 3,000, while a child wristband for ages 6–18 costs HUF 1,500, and children under 6 can enter free of charge. The wristband provides access to participating museum programmes and exhibitions in the capital, and it is valid on the dedicated MU museum buses. Regular public transport in Budapest still requires a separate ticket.

The event wristband will also allow visitors to use the special museum routes marked MU⁠ at no extra charge. These services will operate only on the evening of Museum Night.
