Brazil and IDB Join Forces to Reactivate Railroad Sections for Sustainability
14.12.2024
Brazil’s partnership with the IDB aims to reactivate railroad sections, improving logistics efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. This effort promotes regional development and supports sustainable transportation solutions across the nation. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

A National Strategy to Reactivate Railroad Sections
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Infra S.A. have joined forces to conduct feasibility studies for revitalizing 10,000 kilometers of inactive railroad tracks. This collaboration supports Brazil’s efforts to shift towards low-carbon logistics by increasing the role of rail transportation in the national matrix.

By analyzing inactive sections returned by concessionaires, such as Rumo Malha Sul, Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica (FCA), and Ferrovia Transnordestina Logística (FTL), the project seeks innovative ways to repurpose these assets. These studies will guide new investment opportunities and ensure logistical efficiency through sustainable transportation.
Sustainable Growth Through Rail Infrastructure Revitalization
This initiative goes beyond reactivating railroad sections; it aims to integrate small producers into the global market while addressing regional logistical challenges. The project uses data from Brazil’s National Logistics Plan, combined with technical and environmental evaluations, to ensure informed decision-making.
The IDB’s expertise and international perspective play a vital role in accelerating the delivery of feasibility studies. Within six months, pre-feasibility assessments will identify viable sections for redevelopment, promoting economic competitiveness and environmental responsibility.
Revitalizing Brazil’s rail network is a significant step toward creating a more sustainable and efficient logistics system. The IDB’s support ensures that this ambitious project aligns with Brazil’s long-term economic and environmental goals, fostering greater regional integration and low-carbon growth.
