03.07.2026

Benalla Railway Station upgrade works have continued with Inland Rail demolishing the former access road and bridge into the station, following the earlier decommissioning and removal of the old east track.

Demolition works at Benalla Station

Bridge demolition began in June. The first works included removing the bridge deck and the station access road, while almost 12,000 cubic metres of material has been removed from the bridge abutments.

In July, the old station underpass is due to be demolished. That will clear the way for construction of a new station forecourt, open public spaces, improved car parking, a passenger drop-off zone and bus interchange areas.

New tracks and accessibility upgrades

The new east and west tracks in front of the station have already been commissioned. A new platform is also being built to serve the west track.

The wider works at Benalla Railway Station include a new pedestrian underpass, improved accessibility, new lifts, ramps and stairs. These changes are intended to enhance connections between the station precinct and Benalla town centre.

The Benalla station works are part of Inland Rail’s Beveridge to Albury section in Victoria, where 262 km of existing track is being upgraded between Beveridge and the Victoria-NSW border at Albury-Wodonga. Inland Rail says works are being delivered at 12 sites along the North East rail line in two tranches, with Benalla included in Tranche 2.

The project page lists Benalla as a station modification site and shows progress at 60% in June 2026, while Inland Rail construction in Victoria is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
