The first stage of the B2N Rail Upgrade brings together several rail and road works across the corridor. According to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the project will shift the existing rail alignment between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains, remove three level crossings and expand park ‘n’ ride facilities at Beerburrum, Nambour and Landsborough. New and upgraded infrastructure is also included, with safety improvements forming part of the works.

The upgrade also sits alongside The Wave, a major infrastructure project that will include a heavy passenger rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya. That rail line will connect with a metro-style service, allowing journeys to Sunshine Coast Airport through Mountain Creek and Maroochydore CBD.

One central part of the current programme is the duplicated rail section between Beerburrum and Beerwah. The project is intended to complete the “missing link” in duplicated rail along this part of the corridor.

The designs now made public include community feedback provided last year. They give the public and transport users a more detailed view of how the works are expected to affect rail travel and freight movement on the North Coast Line.

North Coast Line capacity and freight links

Major construction works for the rail duplication started in late 2025. Along the corridor, earthworks and supporting activities are continuing as crews build the foundations for new road and rail infrastructure.

Stage 1 of the B2N Rail Upgrade has a value of $1 billion. In a federal ministerial release on the detailed designs, the Australian Government confirmed its $616.7 million commitment, while the Queensland Government is investing $387.5 million.

The design materials are available through the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.

Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade and The Wave

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said: “This is excellent progress for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade, which will support better public transport connections for Sunshine Coast communities and help take pressure off the Bruce Highway.

“Once complete, the upgrade will significantly improve the capacity and reliability of the North Coast Line, supporting more efficient passenger services and stronger freight connections between the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Brisbane and beyond.

“B2N plays a crucial role in delivering The Wave from Brisbane through to Kawana and on to Maroochydore Airport.”
