The Bedford train collision on June 19, 2026, involved two East Midlands Railway passenger trains near Elstow in Bedfordshire, with one train stopped before the second struck it.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has issued preliminary information⁠ on the accident, which happened at about 5:15 p.m. on the Midland Main Line, roughly 4 km south of Bedford Station. Both trains were travelling to London St Pancras.

The collision involved train 1H46, the 4:40 p.m. Corby to London St Pancras service, and train 1B67, the 3:50 p.m. Nottingham to London St Pancras service.

The engineer of train 1H46 died in the accident. RAIB said 162 people were injured, including 102 who needed hospital treatment. When the initial information was published, 53 people remained in hospital, with 8 of them in critical condition.

Both trains were heavily damaged, and parts of both trains derailed.

Bedford train collision involved a stopped leading train

RAIB’s preliminary investigation found that train 1B67 had stopped near signal WH152 when the collision occurred.

The train came to a halt after a fault in its onboard Automatic Warning System caused the brakes to apply.

Railway system data showed that the track circuit for the section occupied by train 1B67 was recorded as occupied.

In those conditions, the signalling interlocking should have set signal WH154, located behind the stopped train, to red. This would protect the train from other movements approaching from behind.

Train 1H46 passed red signal WH154

RAIB said train 1H46 left Platform 1 at Bedford Station at 5:10 p.m. and travelled on the Up Slow line.

Forward-facing video from the train shows that it passed a yellow signal after leaving the station. A yellow signal allows a train to continue but tells the engineer to expect a red signal ahead and be ready to stop.

Train 1H46 continued along the Up Slow line toward Bedford South Junction, where it crossed to the Up Fast line. The signal protecting that junction was also displaying yellow when the train passed it.

After moving onto the Up Fast line, train 1H46 approached signal WH154. Front-facing camera footage showed that WH154 was red as the train approached and then passed it.

RAIB said investigators are still examining data from the onboard recorder in the leading car of train 1H46. That recorder could not be accessed until the damaged car had been recovered.

As a result, investigators have not yet determined what AWS indication the engineer received in the cab or how he responded to it.

Braking data and AWS system evidence

The recorder from the rear car of train 1H46 has already been recovered and downloaded.

Although that recorder does not capture AWS activity, it does record speed and braking inputs.

Initial analysis indicates that the brakes were applied around 9 seconds before impact, when the train was travelling at about 122 km/h.

The same preliminary data shows that train 1H46 was moving at around 79 km/h when the collision occurred.

RAIB said some of these details may be revised as the investigation continues.

The Automatic Warning System is used on Britain’s railways to warn train operators about signals and other infrastructure features.

It works through magnets installed in the track, which activate receivers fitted to trains.

When a train approaches a green signal, the operator hears a bell-like sound. When the train approaches any other signal aspect, including yellow or red, the system gives a different audible warning, similar to a horn.

The engineer must acknowledge that warning by pressing a button in the cab. Once acknowledged, a visual reminder remains visible to the engineer.

If the warning is not acknowledged within a short period, the train’s emergency brakes are applied automatically.

Accident site and train

The collision happened on the Midland Main Line between Bedford and Flitwick.

At that location, the railway has four tracks: two fast lines and two slow lines. Up lines carry trains toward London, while Down lines are used by trains travelling away from London.

The impact occurred on the Up Fast line near signal WH152.

The permitted maximum speed at the site ranges from 161 to 201 km/h, depending on train type.

Train 1H46 was a four-car Class 360 EMU. Train 1B67 was a five-car Class 810 EMU with both electric and diesel power.

RAIB was informed of the accident at 17:27 and sent investigators to the site immediately. The first RAIB investigator reached the scene at 18:26.

Investigators recovered onboard recorders from the trains, often referred to as black boxes. Some recorders were in damaged parts of the trains and could only be removed during recovery work.

RAIB also obtained CCTV, signalling records and radio communication recordings.

The trains were examined for internal and external damage, including through laser scanning and aerial inspection.

RAIB inspectors are also supervising tests of signalling equipment in the area.

The recovery operation requires the damaged vehicles to be lifted by cranes and moved by road to a secure storage location.

RAIB is coordinating with railway industry recovery teams so that investigators can access the vehicles involved in the accident.

The recovery process is expected to continue for several days.

RAIB is also working with Network Rail on the repairs needed before the line can reopen.

What is known about train services?

The collision also affected passenger services through Bedford. In a joint rail industry update, East Midlands Railway and Network Rail warned passengers to expect disruption until the end of the week ending 28 June and to travel through the route only if essential. The railway was expected to remain closed between Bedford and Luton, with no GTR services north of Luton and no EMR services south of Bedford. Limited rail replacement buses were announced between Luton and Bedford, while EMR said its trains that normally start and terminate at London St Pancras would instead start and terminate at Bedford.

What RAIB will investigate next?

RAIB said its investigation will seek to establish the full sequence of events that led to the collision.

The investigation will consider the actions of those involved and any factors that may have influenced them. It will also examine the condition and performance of the brakes, AWS equipment and other safety systems on train 1H46.

Investigators will look at why train 1B67 stopped, as well as the condition of signal WH154 and its associated AWS equipment. They will also assess the signal’s position, visibility and conspicuity.

The inquiry will also cover the structural behaviour of both trains during the collision, the emergency response, and how the risk of a train passing a signal at danger at this location had been assessed.

RAIB will examine any underlying causes, including action taken in response to relevant previous safety recommendations.

The RAIB investigation is separate from inquiries being carried out by the rail industry, British Transport Police and the Office of Rail and Road, the UK regulator for rail and road⁠.

RAIB said its final report, including any safety recommendations, will be published after the investigation is completed.
