ARF Receives First Alstom Traxx Passenger Locomotive

Alstom Traxx locomotive delivery has started in Romania. The Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) has received the first unit. It is the first of 16 serial Traxx Passenger electric locomotives.

The locomotive is being supplied under a January 2024 contract between Alstom and ARF. The programme is intended to support cleaner passenger rail services in Romania. Also, it is aimed at faster and more efficient operations.

The unit has been confirmed as ready for operation after completing the full testing required for market authorisation. It can travel at up to 200 km/h. At the same time, driver training will take place in parallel. Meanwhile, further deliveries are scheduled throughout 2026.

In addition, the four-axle electric locomotives are equipped with a fully suspended drive system. They also carry Alstom’s onboard ERTMS system. That system is intended to provide optimal efficiency and high levels of safety and security.
Contract scope for ARF electric locomotives
Serban Iorga, Alstom Managing Director for Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova, said:

Separately, the contract for the 16 locomotives also includes 20 years of maintenance and repair services. The agreement can be extended by a further 20 years.
