Antwerp Central – Antwerp main train station (Belgium)
Antwerp’s main railway station is one of the city’s landmarks. The station building with a dome and eight Gothic towers was built in 1895-1905. Locals call it the railway “cathedral”. 1998 to 2009 a large-scale restoration and reconstruction of the station was carried out.
More than 20 types of marble, antique columns, balustrades, gilded coats of arms and an abundance of decorative elements – the interior decor of the building is striking in its luxury and grandeur, it resembles rather palace interiors than station premises.
The territory, on which the passenger platforms are located on three levels, is covered with a massive 75-meter dome, which is a structure of glass and metal.
Inside the station there is also a whole floor of cafes and shops, about 30 of which are jewelry. Antwerp-Central is an example of a harmonious combination of an architectural monument and a modern transport hub.
