The new trains will feature modern, spacious cabins and panoramic windows, providing passengers with excellent views.
The dual-mode Amtrak Airo trains will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 201 km/h and will have the capability to be powered by both overhead lines and diesel fuel.
Additionally, some of these trains will include traction batteries in addition to diesel engines.
The trains will be equipped with remote monitoring systems and full integrated digital diagnostics to ensure high reliability.
Furthermore, the new Airo trains consume less fuel and emit 90% fewer solid particles when operating on diesel fuel.
In July 2021, Amtrak signed contracts with Siemens Mobility totaling $3.4 billion for the design, manufacture, and technical servicing of 73 trains.
The entire fleet will be manufactured in the United States at Siemens Mobility’s factory in Sacramento, California, with the first deliveries commencing in 2024.
