For passengers, the work focuses on the platform area and the routes leading into the station. Amtrak lists new lighting, guardrails, accessible parking spaces, ADA-compliant paths to the platform and station building, detectable warning surfaces and updated signage among the planned upgrades.

The project falls under Amtrak’s nationwide ADA Stations Program, which is designed to expand access across the rail network. At Prince station, that accessibility work will also be carried out with the site’s architectural status in mind, as the station is considered a landmark.

Preserving the station’s 1940s character

Amtrak said the project will retain the station’s 1940s Art Moderne style. The approach includes in-kind replacement of components and fixtures chosen to remain compatible with the historic setting.

Prince station is served by Amtrak’s Cardinal service and functions as the main station for much of Fayette County. Construction is expected to continue while the station remains in operation, with completion scheduled for summer 2027.
