Amtrak Cascades Expands Service and Increases Ridership

Amtrak reported that its Cascades route transported 941,727 passengers between Portland and Vancouver, B.C. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed a 36% ridership increase from January through September 2024.

Additional daily trains played a crucial role in boosting passenger numbers, improving accessibility, and enhancing travel convenience. WSDOT manages Amtrak Cascades, connecting Eugene, Oregon, and Vancouver, B.C.

Both WSDOT and the Oregon Department of Transportation jointly fund and oversee operations. The service runs on tracks owned by private railway companies and public transit agencies.

BNSF Railway owns the rail infrastructure in Washington and British Columbia, supporting cross-border transportation. Sound Transit maintains a section between Tacoma and Nisqually, while Union Pacific controls the Oregon segment.

Various public and private entities, including WSDOT and local transit agencies, own stations along the Cascades route. A second daily train between Bellingham and Vancouver, B.C., was introduced in 2023.

New Investments Boost Amtrak Cascades and High-Speed Rail Plans

The Federal Railroad Administration allocated $50 million to advance high-speed rail development in the Pacific Northwest. Expansion efforts aim to improve connectivity, speed, and efficiency for long-distance train travel.

In December 2023, WSDOT and Amtrak introduced two additional daily round trips between Seattle and Portland. These supplementary services increased ridership by providing more travel options.

Before this expansion, four daily round trips operated between Seattle and Portland, along with existing routes connecting Portland and Eugene. Two daily round trips also served Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.

The additional daily trains significantly contributed to the sharp increase in passenger numbers and revenue growth. Amtrak and WSDOT remain committed to enhancing rail service across the region.

Infrastructure investments and strategic service expansions continue strengthening the Pacific Northwest’s passenger rail network. With increasing demand, Amtrak aims to provide reliable and efficient travel options.

Passenger rail remains an essential part of the region’s transportation system, reducing congestion and offering an eco-friendly alternative. Future improvements will focus on increasing frequency and cutting travel times.

Stakeholders anticipate further enhancements that will optimize network capacity, reliability, and efficiency. Continued public investment ensures the long-term sustainability of regional rail travel.

WSDOT and Amtrak prioritize customer experience by focusing on service reliability and efficiency. Improved scheduling and additional departures will accommodate rising demand and boost ridership.

By integrating high-speed rail into the Pacific Northwest’s transit infrastructure, regional connectivity will improve significantly. Ongoing developments will support economic growth, sustainability, and efficient long-distance travel.
