Amtrak car crash in Milwaukie left a woman dead Tuesday after an Amtrak train struck her vehicle at a rail crossing, police said.

The crash happened at 2:43 p.m. near Southeast Harrison Street and Southeast 31st Avenue. Milwaukie Police Department initially described it on social media⁠ as a traffic incident “involving a train and vehicle.”

When officers arrived, they found a white sedan that had been hit by a southbound Amtrak train at the crossing. A woman remained inside the vehicle and was in critical condition, according to police.

Clackamas Fire crews helped remove the woman from the car⁠. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries, Milwaukie Police said.

Police said her name will not be released publicly until her family has been notified.

Amtrak car crash in Milwaukie investigated by police

According to an initial account from a Milwaukie Police spokesperson, the car had been on the tracks facing west and was not moving in the travel lane while the crossing arms were down. The southbound Amtrak train hit the vehicle and pushed it south into an area east of the tracks.

The train stopped immediately after the collision, and Amtrak personnel began working with investigators, police said.

A spokesperson for the Milwaukie Police Department said:

“The scene is being investigated by the Clackamas County Craft forensic team,”

KATU News reached out to Amtrak for comment.

Amtrak Police are also investigating the incident.

Milwaukie Police said:

“The incident is not suspected to be criminal in nature,”

Highway 224 reopened after train and vehicle crash

Southeast Highway 224 to Southeast 32nd Avenue was closed after the crash, according to Milwaukie Police. The Oregon Department of Transportation later said the highway had reopened as of 6:15 p.m.

Police also said the crash caused the car to hit a Portland General Electric power pole, cutting electricity to several nearby residents. PGE crews were working to repair the damaged lines and restore service.

Officials initially expected the road to remain closed for several more hours.

ODOT warned drivers at 3:45 p.m. that the crash was causing delays on eastbound Highway 224.

ODOT said:

“This may be an extended turn lane closure, so consider using an alternate route,”

“If you are traveling on OR 224 in Milwaukie please watch out for emergency responders.”

The highway has since reopened.
