The American Supply Chain Sovereignty Initiative, announced last week by the U.S. Department of Transportation, is a new effort to strengthen the national supply chain through a high-visibility dashboard linking major ports and cargo hubs with ocean carriers, transportation companies and retailers.

USDOT officials⁠ said the initiative is aimed at improving visibility across freight movement and supporting faster cargo handling.

“A more transparent supply chain will accelerate cargo processing, lower logistics costs and empower America’s transportation workforce,”

The department is asking Congress to include the necessary legislation in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act. That authority would allow USDOT to create role-based access for specific date points.

FLOW program and freight strategy

The initiative builds on the Freight Logistic Optimization Works program, known as FLOW⁠, which USDOT launched in 2022. It also aligns with the goals of the 2026 National Freight Strategic Plan⁠, launched in May.
