Alstom trains for Portugal are at the centre of a €1.03 billion contract. As Alstom announced, the deal covers 153 Adessia Stream trains for Comboios de Portugal (CP). The agreement was announced on 10 March 2026. It supports rail fleet renewal and extra capacity on key passenger routes. At the same time, it forms part of CP’s programme to improve reliability, accessibility and service quality across the country.

Comboios de Portugal expands the Adessia Stream trains order

The deal follows a base contract signed in October 2025 for 117 Adessia Stream trains. It was later expanded by 36 additional units. The delivery schedule was also brought forward. Meanwhile, the first trains are scheduled to enter service in 2029. The accelerated plan responds to growing passenger demand. It also addresses the need to modernise existing rolling stock.

Of the full order, 98 commuter trains will strengthen suburban connections. These services cover the Lisbon, Porto and Cascais areas. The remaining 55 trains will enhance regional lines. In addition, the new fleet is intended to improve comfort, reliability and onboard connectivity. This applies to both suburban and regional services. The trains are designed specifically for the Portuguese network. Also, they will offer improved comfort, accessibility and onboard connectivity for daily commuters and regional passengers.

Train manufacturing facility in Portugal to support delivery

The contract also includes a new train manufacturing facility in Portugal. The site is intended to support project delivery. It will also reinforce national industrial capacity. Still, it is expected to contribute to long-term skills development and employment in the rail sector. Close to 300 direct jobs are expected to be created.

“This project supports CP’s vision to deliver more reliable and accessible rail services for passengers while preparing the network for future demand,” said David Torres, Managing Director of Alstom Portugal. “This partnership will also deliver long-term impact by strengthening local capabilities, creating new employment opportunities and contributing to the sustainable development of Portugal’s railway sector.”

Separately, Bruno Florence, Alstom´s Project Director for CP, said: “Renewing the regional and suburban fleet is a key priority for CP. This contract addresses operational needs while aligning with Portugal’s broader objectives for capability building, sustainable mobility, industrial development and job creation.”

Matosinhos manufacturing site and Portugal rail fleet renewal

To deliver the project, Alstom will open a new manufacturing site in Matosinhos. It will be located in the Porto region. The facility will cover more than 20,000 square metres. It will also be equipped with modern production technologies. For example, construction of the site will be carried out in partnership with Portuguese civil works company DST.

The project will create close to 300 jobs in Portugal. These roles include engineering, technical and skilled trades positions. Fifteen per cent of positions will be reserved for specific groups. These include young unemployed people and the long-term unemployed. In addition, they include individuals with health conditions or impairments.
