Additional Siemens SC-42DM Locomotives Heading to Metro-North, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

Siemens Mobility announced on September 26th that it will provide an additional six SC-42DM dual-mode locomotives (diesel-electric/third-rail) to MTA Metro-North Railroad, expanding on the initial order of 27 units placed in 2020 for the New York-Connecticut commuter railroad.

These six locomotives are funded by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT). They will replace GE P32AC-DM locomotives that have reached or exceeded their expected 25-year lifespan.

Siemens’ contract includes the potential for up to 171 SC-42DM locomotives for Metro-North, MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the latter for Amtrak’s Empire Corridor service to Penn Station New York.

These locomotives will be manufactured at Siemens’ facility in Sacramento, California, meeting the current EPA Tier IV standards for operation on the Park Avenue Tunnel and third-rail territory throughout New York State.

Delivery of the new locomotives will occur progressively through 2027. Metro-North’s initial order was for 19 units, expanded to 27 with the exercise of the first option, and this second option brings the total to 33. Additional options are available for the purchase of 32 more units, along with 14 for ConnDOT, 25 for NYSDOT, and 60 for LIRR.

The SC-42DM is rated at 4,200 horsepower in diesel-electric mode, featuring a Cummins QSK95 prime mover, with a maximum speed of 110 mph (diesel) or 80 mph (electric).
