Investments in Sweden railways

Swedish Transport Infrastructure presents an outline where it invests €26.3 billion on development and €19.1 billion on maintenance. It awaits the approval of the decision by the government in spring 2026.

Reducing infrastructure maintenance debt as the top priority, it had hit €7.2 billion by 2025. It will be abolished by 2050 as the target of the administration for the financial solid foundation of future operations.

It also emphasizes the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) rollout significantly. It will envelop high-intensity lines by 2042 as well as enhance safety and operational reliability.

Some projects will be rescheduled or abandoned as they do not provide sufficient cost effectiveness. In this way, the resources will go towards higher return areas for the passenger and freight. It also contains provisions for climate adaptation as well as denser network capacity.

“The transport sector should improve its capacity for supporting crucial war peacetime services in times of war, martial readiness, and finally in war,” the Swedish Transport Administration declared, underscoring the imperative for secure railways for the country’s national security.

Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson reported that autumn 2024 allocated only 10–15% of the debt. He further reported that the agency was not in a position to accomodate bigger budgets as it had management and resource limitations.

Specialists claim success not only relies on political endorsement but also on the effective distribution of resources. In effect, the project will facilitate Sweden in the development of the contemporary sustainable railway infrastructure network competitive throughout Europe.
