01.05.2025
Slovak national railway operator ZSSK has signed a contract with Stadler to supply up to four new KISS electric trains worth approximately €100 million, designated for the route between Bratislava and Žilina. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Expanding the Electric Train Fleet
Under the agreement, the first electric train will enter service by the end of 2026, followed by a second in 2027. The contract also includes an option to purchase two additional units if needed.

These electric trains will serve regional routes between Bratislava and Žilina, improving capacity and passenger comfort. ZSSK previously ordered KISS units in 2021, which began operating during the winter of 2024.
The new trainsets will follow the same configuration: six cars, a total length of 155.9 meters, 611 seats including 30 in first class, and standing space for up to 770 passengers. Their top speed will reach 160 km/h.
Technical Features and Passenger Comfort
Each electric train will be equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a video surveillance system, and four restrooms, including one accessible to passengers with reduced mobility. Spacious multifunctional zones will accommodate bicycles and strollers.
Roof-mounted cameras will monitor pantograph conditions to enhance operational safety. The end cars are powered, while the middle cars are trailers. Platform-level boarding is enabled at a height of 580 mm, ensuring barrier-free access.
The trains are designed for 25 kV 50 Hz AC lines and feature both the Mirel VZ1 national safety system and the European ETCS control system. This investment highlights ZSSK’s ongoing strategy to modernize its fleet and strengthen regional rail connectivity in Slovakia.
