Zangezur Corridor drives economic integration

Turkiye has launched a key railway project in its eastern region to link Kars with the Nakhchivan border. Officials highlight its potential to redefine regional trade routes and logistics.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu emphasized the project’s strategic importance. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan echoed this, calling it a bridge for growth and stronger regional partnerships.

The $2.79 billion investment will fund construction expected to conclude by 2029. The line aims to transport 5.5 million passengers and 15 million tons of freight annually, boosting efficiency and competitiveness across the corridor.

Zangezur Corridor strengthens geopolitical ties

Regional leaders see the Zangezur Corridor as the missing link in the Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. This network improves connectivity between Asia and Europe while bypassing congested trade hubs.

Azerbaijan and Armenia recently signed a landmark agreement with U.S. support to advance the project. This diplomatic breakthrough signals greater cooperation and a step toward regional stability.

However, Iran expressed concerns over the corridor’s proximity to its border. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reassured Tehran that Armenia will maintain full control and provide security along the route.

The region’s complex history, including decades of conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, underscores the importance of this initiative. Experts believe the railway could promote lasting peace through enhanced economic interdependence.

As construction progresses, analysts predict the corridor will foster stronger trade networks, deeper cooperation, and new opportunities for businesses throughout Eurasia.
