Zangezur Corridor: A Controversial Project or a Strategic Necessity for the Caucasus?
10.02.2025
Azerbaijan has proposed that Armenia jointly open the Zangezur Corridor for faster train transit. However, the Armenian government has reacted skeptically, citing risks to national sovereignty. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Prospects for Opening the Zangezur Corridor
Armenia considers the corridor project not as an economic initiative but as a strategic political move that shifts the balance of power. Officials argue that its launch would grant Azerbaijan unrestricted access to Nakhichevan.

Yerevan strongly opposes Baku’s initiative and suggests an alternative transit solution. It proposes railway cargo transportation via a bypass route through Georgia.
Why Does the Zangezur Corridor Cause Disputes?
The Armenian government claims that the corridor’s operation would negatively impact the country’s sovereignty. As a compromise, it suggests allowing train transit only through Georgia.
Armenian authorities believe that transit routes should consider the interests of all parties involved in the conflict. However, Baku insists on a shorter and more beneficial route through Meghri.
Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that the alternative option involves restoring railway connections through Armenian territory. He insists that this route would take into account the interests of both countries.
Experts highlight the lack of necessary infrastructure, which complicates the organization of train movement along the proposed route. Currently, no railway exists in the Meghri region.
