Infrastructure manager ŽSR has awarded ELTRA a €216.1 million contract to modernize and electrify the 33.5 km Bánovce nad Ondavou – Humenné line, located east of Košice

The existing single-track line will be electrified at 3 kV DC, with provisions for future conversion to 25 kV 50 Hz. Additionally, the maximum speed on the line will be increased from 100 km/h to 120 km/h. According to Railway Supply, citing Railway Gazette.

Once completed, this project will enable the operation of electric trains on the 97 km route from Košice to Humenné, via Trebišov.

The project will facilitate the connection of Humenné, Michalovce, Trebišov, and Košice with express trains operating every 60 minutes, compared to the current interval of 120 minutes. This significant improvement in transport frequency will enhance the connectivity of upper and lower Zemplín regions and improve travel to and from the city of Košice,” stated Miloslav Havrila, Director-General of ŽSR.

The project will be co-financed from the EU’s Recovery & Resilience Fund, with completion scheduled for mid-2026.
