Three more hydrogen fuel cell trains have been ordered from Stadler
22.01.2024
Italian operator Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC) continues to enhance its transport fleet with a focus on sustainability innovations, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The order for three hydrogen fuel cell trains from the Swiss company Stadler confirms FdC’s strategic direction.
These 950 mm gauge trains will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells, making FdC a pioneer in narrow-gauge transport using this technology.
Each 50-meter train features two passenger cars with aluminum bodies and an intermediate section housing fuel cell modules, hydrogen tanks, and other equipment.
Stadler, having previously supplied similar trains in the USA, where they are undergoing trials, is the sole provider of hydrogen fuel cell trains for narrow-gauge lines.
The FdC trains will be assembled at Stadler’s facility in Bussnang, Switzerland, with plans for operation starting in 2026.
FdC, planning to invest over 400 million euros in hydrogen fuel cell rolling stock and corresponding infrastructure, aims not only to align with ecological sustainability trends but also to strengthen its position in the regional transport market.
