Yarra Trams Trambassadors program rolls out on key routes
15.01.2026
The Yarra Trams Trambassadors program has been introduced to make late-night tram travel safety feel safer for passengers travelling after dark.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Where Trambassadors are operating in Melbourne?
Teams of three Trambassadors are now working across Melbourne tram routes 12, 19, 57, 86, 96 and 109, as reported by Rail Express. Yarra Trams says the initiative is designed to provide a friendly, highly-trained presence that can deter antisocial behaviour on trams, while also supporting passengers who feel unsafe or need assistance during their journey.

Training and how passengers can identify Trambassadors
The mixed-gender teams receive training in de-escalation methods, compassionate engagement and trauma-informed practices. Passengers can recognise Trambassadors by their green and navy uniforms, along with a new Trambassador icon in the TramTracker app and at selected stops. Travellers are encouraged to approach the teams at any point if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe, or if they need help with wayfinding.
How the Trambassadors program was designed?
The Trambassadors initiative was co-designed with frontline Yarra Trams employees and behavioural science experts from The Behavioural Architects. Research carried out during development found passengers feel 17 per cent safer when visible, approachable staff are present onboard a tram, according to Transport Victoria.
