The agreement aims to ensure compatibility between the ETCS Level 2 train control system and the Advanced Train Management System (ATMS) developed by ARTC, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Wabtec and Australian Rail Track (ARTC) have signed an agreement for collaboration

This collaboration includes developing an operational concept and standards for integrating these two different systems.

Both ETCS Level 2 and ATMS use radio channels for train control, but their approaches to determining train location differ.

ETCS Level 2 uses passive trackside receivers to correct readings, while ATMS relies on GPS satellite navigation.

ATMS, developed in partnership with Lockheed Martin, also enables information exchange via mobile communication networks between the NCC control center and onboard safety devices.

Train operators receive information on permitted speeds and temporary speed restrictions on a display. In case of speed exceedance, service or emergency braking is activated.

ATMS also implements virtual moving block sections, reducing the inter-train interval to 4 minutes.

The onboard device includes train integrity monitoring using satellite navigation and radio channels.

On lines where ATMS is deployed, traditional signal lights are not needed.

There are plans to deploy the ATMS system along approximately 8,500 km of railway tracks in Australia, mainly on freight lines.

Meanwhile, the ETCS Level 2 system is already implemented or being implemented on several railway lines across different states of Australia, where passenger trains primarily operate.
