The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF), together with Ukrzaliznytsia, Zaporizhzhia and Lviv hospitals, as well as the Ministry of Health, organized a special train to transport wounded patients from Zaporizhzhia to Lviv.

It is noted that all the evacuated patients are residents of Mariupol and villages near the city, they have traumatic-explosive injuries.

It is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to Suspilne.

The special train transported nine patients and nine emergency doctors from MSF. Four patients are in serious condition, five are in moderate condition. Two children were among them. In particular, a 13-year-old boy who received a broken limb and a serious injury. His family was evacuated from Mariupol.

After the train arrived in Lviv on April 1, the children from the train were promptly taken to the Lviv Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital “Okhmatdit”.

And adult patients – to the Lviv Regional Hospital for Veterans of Wars and the Repressed named after Y. Lipa.

In total, the journey lasted approximately 20 hours.

“We worked with Ukrainian Railways management for almost three weeks to make this happen,” said Christopher Stokes, emergency coordinator for MSF in Ukraine.

According to him, it is primarily about the peace of mind of patients who will continue treatment after shelling.

In addition, the load on hospitals located in areas of active hostilities or nearby is reduced.


MSF also announced the completion of another train that will be able to transport more patients from frontline hospitals to medical facilities in safer regions.

For the larger train, UZ has already provided wagons according to the organization’s specifications. Currently, work is underway on their technical equipment.
