29.04.2025
Siemens Mobility has launched the production of hydrogen trains that will soon replace diesel trains on the Südostbayernbahn network routes. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Siemens Mobility will also handle the maintenance of the hydrogen supply infrastructure. At the same time, Deutsche Bahn (DB) will build an electrolysis plant for train refueling in the city of Mühldorf.

The Bavarian government has ordered three two-car Mireo Plus H units to replace outdated diesel trains. The new hydrogen trains will operate between Mühldorf, Tüßling, and Burghausen on a 32.3-kilometer non-electrified route.
Development of hydrogen trains in Bavaria
The manufacturer announced that the trains will feature special windows to improve mobile signal reception. Hydrogen trains will reach speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour and cover up to 1,200 kilometers on a single tank.
Initially, Siemens Mobility planned for a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour and a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. However, updated data now shows improved technical specifications.
Prospects for hydrogen trains on regional routes
By introducing hydrogen trains, Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn are taking a major step toward eco-friendly transportation. This project will become a key part of Germany’s sustainable transport development.
Thus, Bavaria will become one of the first regions where hydrogen technology replaces traditional diesel trains. Companies are confident that hydrogen trains will improve the quality of regional transportation.
