Virginia train derailment halts CSX and Amtrak service

A train derailment occurred in the state of Virginia near Providence Forge, affecting the schedule of both Amtrak and CSX after two train locomotives and 15 cars of a coal train derailed on Saturday.

The train accident occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. on October 25 in New Kent County, roughly 22 miles east of Richmond. The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the accident resulted in coal spilling into a wetlands region near Barnetts Road, which had been temporarily closed.

There were no reported injuries. CSX activated its emergency crews to respond to the area. CSX reported that it was evaluating the site with local authorities in order to clear the tracks safely.
The following train was canceled:
Amtrak canceled two Northeast Regional train No. 99 & No. 124. The service cancellation occurred between Richmond & Newport News. The organization indicated it provided transportation by bus until the line was reopened.
Train derailment prompts cleanup and investigation
Crews of CSX stayed on the scene on Saturday night trying to assess the track damage and move the derailed cars. The line where the accident occurred is found on CSX’s Peninsula Subdivision. There was no information released on how quickly this route will be reopened.
According to local sources, coal spilled into wetlands near the scene, though there was neither fire nor chemical leakage. Cleanup efforts started right after the accident occurred. The cause of this incident is not known yet.
The Sheriff’s Office did confirm that the closures occurred only on Barnetts Road in Charles City County. Residents near the site were asked not to approach or visit the area until CSX crews finished the cleanup efforts.
