According to DRPT, the session will outline the rail planning process. It will also present early findings from initial data collection. Also, participants can comment on rail preferences, strategies and travel habits.

Public input for the 2026 state rail plan

DRPT officials said the feedback will help shape an updated plan. In addition, it is intended to reflect the needs and priorities of passengers, freight partners and communities across Virginia.

The Virginia Statewide Rail Plan sets out a future direction for rail in Virginia. It covers short-term investment planning of up to six years. At the same time, it covers long-term horizons of up to 20 years.

Passenger and freight rail improvements

The plan will guide future improvements to passenger and freight rail services. These include infrastructure, operations and safety considerations, according to DRPT officials.

Separately, DRPT works with rail and public transportation stakeholders to provide services throughout Virginia. The agency also promotes transportation options to the general public, businesses and community decision makers.
