In 2017, Wiener Linien and Siemens Mobility signed a contract for the delivery of 34 six-car X-Wagen trains, with an option for an additional 11 metro trains equipped for fully automated operation (GOA4) and driver operation.
As per the contract, the tenth X-Wagen metro will be delivered by the end of this year, with Siemens Mobility providing up to three more X-Wagen metro trains annually to Wiener Linien starting in 2024.
The contract stipulates that the last train is expected to be handed over by the end of 2030, and Siemens Mobility will be responsible for their maintenance for a period of 24 years.
These walk-through, barrier-free trains are air-conditioned, and the passenger area is designed to be open and well-lit.
For the first time, the Passenger Information System Plus (PI+) with door-selective guidance has been installed to ensure optimal passenger flow.
Significant lightweight construction measures throughout the vehicle’s design significantly reduce its overall weight.
These vehicles feature a recycling ratio of more than 90%.
The new fully automated X-Wagen trains will also be deployed on the future U5 line, running between Karlsplatz and Frankhplatz from 2026, and on the extension of the U2 line.

These metro trains are also designed for semi-automated or manual operation on existing lines.
The new trainsets offer an improved seating arrangement that enhances the ambiance and ensures barrier-free access to wheelchair spaces and multi-purpose areas, providing passengers with increased comfort and faster services while enhancing safety.
These new trains will replace the old Silberpfeil fleet, also manufactured by Siemens, which has been in operation since 1972.
