Victoria’s Suburban Rail will significantly reduce travel times, cut congestion across Melbourne, and provide direct train access to major universities for the first time.

Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister Harriet Shing revealed the SRL Travel Time Savings report during a site visit to Burwood, where construction is rapidly progressing near Deakin University.

According to the report, the new line will allow students from Cheltenham to reach Deakin in just 19 minutes—saving 40 minutes. Nurses commuting from Burwood to Box Hill Hospital will complete the trip in only 3.5 minutes.

A student traveling from Caulfield to Glen Waverley can now cut 17 minutes from their journey. Patients from Frankston heading to Monash Medical Centre will benefit from a 15-minute reduction thanks to a seamless transfer at Southland Station.

Cheltenham commuters will reach Monash University in just 10 minutes instead of the current 34-minute drive. Students from Laverton will also reach Deakin in 60 minutes via rail, faster than driving, which takes around 79 minutes.

Victoria’s Suburban Rail Will Ease Congestion and Drive Growth

By taking 600,000 cars off the roads daily, Victoria’s Suburban Rail will make public transport a more attractive choice. This shift will improve urban mobility and reduce stress on Melbourne’s road network.

The project also supports Australia’s largest housing initiative, enabling 70,000 homes near new stations. These areas will give residents easier access to transport, education, and job opportunities.

Construction of Victoria’s Suburban Rail Progresses Statewide

SRL construction is creating 8,000 jobs and is active at all six future stations. In Burwood, deep excavation has reached 15 meters with help from cranes and heavy excavators.

Next year, tunnel boring machines will begin digging toward Glen Waverley and Box Hill. This work marks a major step in delivering faster, easier travel options for Victorians across the metro region.

Once operational, SRL will serve 70,000 passengers daily—saving time and making commutes across Melbourne more efficient.
