Victoria rail and transport construction outlooks and forecasts

Transport is the busiest industry state-wide buoyed by both passenger and freight projects. Spending is estimated to hit a regord high of $16 billion in FY 2025 and experience continued growth due to targeted investments.

They’re penciling in a steady descent to $11.5 billion by FY2030. But consistent financing and project construction will ensure the five-year average remains near historical pace.

Victoria’s Trainview and challenges for the antipodean rail industry

Rail construction would slow by approximately 18% ($5.4 billion in FY2025 down to $4.5 billion by FY2030). This change is because of the completion of several crucial highway and metro rail projects.

But momentum is still strong, with the $14 billion Suburban Rail Loop East and the $8 billion Airport Rail Link under way. There was likely to be stimulus from freight rail expansion, such as the $1.8 billion Outer Metropolitan Ring Rail South, the report said.

Speaking at the CCF Victoria Road and Rail Outlook Breakfast, CEO Lisa Kinross said risk management and working together with partners was key on major contracts between all tiers of government. She emphasised threats from funding shortfalls and contractor insolvency, but urged effective forward planning and skills building.
