The state budget of Ukraine in 2022 may provide UAH 5.5 billion for the development of passenger railway traffic, – Oleksandr Kava.

The revised draft of the state budget for 2022 was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for consideration, informs Railway Supply magazine with reference to Railinsider.

It provides for about UAH 5.5 billion for railway projects. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Finance of Ukraine Oleksandr Kava.

According to the official, UAH 3.5 billion is planned to be spent on the purchase of new passenger cars, including 70 cars for daytime high-speed trains. Also UAH 2 billion is envisaged to be directed to projects of passenger railway infrastructure.

This is the completion of the electrification of the Zhitomir-Novograd-Volynsky section with the resumption of the bypass of the Novograd-Volynsky station. “In the coming weeks, construction work will begin at the facility, and completion is scheduled for 2022,” said Оlexandr Kava.

Also, the state budget finances the preparation of project documentation for the restoration of the 1435 mm European track from Chop to Uzhgorod. This will allow launching direct passenger trains from Uzhgorod in the direction of Bratislava, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, Kosice, Munich and making Uzhgorod a railway hub.

In addition, it is planned to build a freight station in Uzhgorod, due to which Uzhgorod enterprises will be able to load their goods and products directly onto the wagons of the 1435 mm European track.

According to the optimistic scenario, the project will be implemented in 2023.

Other projects are currently being worked out, including the further development of the Kyiv City Express system, the restoration of the Mironovka-Kanev line, which will allow the launch of trains in this tourist-attractive town, the electrification of the Vorozhba-Sumy section for the launch of high-speed electric trains Kyiv-Sumy and the restoration of the Galich-Podvysoke line to reduce the travel time to Ivano-Frankivsk and the resorts of the Carpathians for 2-3 hours.
