UZ returned 40% of pre-war freight traffic
18.05.2022
UZ is gradually increasing freight traffic. In May, the railway is already transporting 300-310 thousand tons of cargo per day, which is about 40% of the indicator before martial law.
This was announced by the head of the board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” Olexander Kamyshin, reports the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to the press service of the company.
Before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into the territory of Ukraine, Ukrzaliznytsia loaded an average of 700 thousand tons of cargo per day. In the first days of aggression, this figure fell to 150 thousand tons.
Already in March, it was possible to load 250 thousand tons daily, in April – 295 thousand tons, and since the beginning of May – 300-310 thousand tons. The largest growth is recorded in the transportation of grain – + 86%. In addition, the figures for the transportation of building materials have doubled.
“Before the war, Ukraine exported about 50 million tons of grain per year. We are aware that the further export potential of Ukraine depends on the railway, therefore we are making every effort to reorient exports to the EU and Bessarabia, where there are two ports,” said Olexander Kamyshin.
He also stressed that the railway workers are doing their best to improve exports through border crossings. The Ukrainian railway is ready to reorient transportation from the ports of the South of Ukraine to the western crossings with the EU countries. Unfortunately, the neighboring countries were not ready for such volumes, but the work continues and the volumes will increase,” Olexander Kamyshin summed up.
As previously reported, more than 9 million tons of cargo was transported by rail in April.
