Utrecht railway bridge preservation works start
18.03.2026
Utrecht railway bridge preservation works have started. ProRail has begun maintenance on the structure that spans the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.

Contractor WEST is carrying out the project. It is intended to extend the bridge’s service life. Also, the work is being organised with almost no impact on rail operations. It includes high-pressure cleaning and the removal of dirt and graffiti from the metal structure. “We then treat areas where the bridge has been damaged over time, including rust spots. Once this is completed, we repaint the bridge so that it looks as good as new again,” explained Admir Duric, project manager at WEST.

An initial stage of the works took place on 13 and 14 March. Meanwhile, the next phase will limit closures to weekends in July. This is intended to minimise disruption.

“We are currently in a major wave of maintenance. After the Second World War, many bridges were repaired or rebuilt. Many of them now require maintenance. Previously, we preserved the bridge at Culemborg and we are also working on the bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near Weesp. Many more bridges will follow in the future,” said a construction manager at ProRail.
Why the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal bridge matters?
The Utrecht bridge crosses the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near Leidsche Rijn. In addition, it occupies a strategic position in the Dutch rail network. Utrecht is one of the country’s main rail hubs. As Railway Pro notes, it provides a direct link to Rotterdam, The Hague and Leiden. At the same time, trains on these routes rely fully on the structure. This applies to both passenger services and freight transport. Any disruption or deterioration would affect services along the main western corridors of the Netherlands.
“Like other parts of the railway, railway bridges must be maintained. This also applies to the Utrecht railway bridge, located at a key point in the network. Trains between Utrecht and Rotterdam, The Hague and Leiden pass over this bridge. By carrying out maintenance in a timely manner, we keep the railway reliable and costs under control,” said Abrar Boubkari, construction manager at ProRail.

The bridge also plays a role beyond local traffic. Separately, it supports interregional movements and connects lines that run across the country. Keeping it in proper condition is essential for train safety. Still, it is also essential for the reliability of the wider network. This helps prevent major delays and possible accidents.
For example, the structure supports the regional economy. It enables the fast and safe movement of goods. These goods move from Rotterdam’s ports and logistics centres to other parts of the Netherlands. In addition, the preservation and maintenance of this ageing bridge represent an investment in the safety, efficiency and sustainability of rail transport in the area.
