Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen from Nevada disclosed that two private West Coast projects, namely the LA – Las Vegas line and the California North-South line, would be primary recipients of the funds.
Additionally, eight other projects across the country were identified for federal support.
Washington DC is slated to benefit from a renewed rail line south to Richmond, Virginia, and on to Raleigh, North Carolina.
A notable investment of $729 million will go towards a new rail bridge across the Potomac, accompanied by funds for station and line improvements outside DC.
Other projects include Keystone West, improvements on the Montana stretch of the Empire Builder line, reactivation of the mail platform at Chicago’s Union Station, and $8 million in enhancements to an Alaska Railroad bridge.
Aside from physical infrastructure projects, $34 million has been allocated to the Corridor Identification and Development program.
This initiative aims to identify and develop underserved intercity routes, benefiting regions such as the Colorado Front Range, Northern Lights Express, Cascadia High-Speed Rail, and the Charlotte – Atlanta corridor.
These strategic investments underscore President Biden’s commitment to advancing the nation’s rail infrastructure, fostering connectivity, and addressing critical transportation needs.
The infusion of funds not only supports immediate projects but also lays the groundwork for future advancements in intercity rail travel, ensuring a more robust and efficient transportation network for the American people.
