Government Investment in XPT Rail Fleet Improvements

The fleet has operated for over 40 years, requiring upgrades to maintain service quality for passengers. These enhancements will support continued safe and comfortable travel until the next-generation trains arrive.

The Minns Labour Government has allocated $40.3 million over five years to extend the fleet’s operational lifespan. Sydney Trains will manage the project locally in NSW, ensuring high-quality refurbishments.

Key Enhancements for the XPT Rail Fleet

Mechanical reliability will be improved, along with refreshed interiors, power car upgrades, and better air conditioning. Maintenance will also address toilet facilities and overall service performance.

To facilitate these changes, NSW TrainLink will introduce two premium coach services between Grafton and Sydney for approximately one year, starting mid-March 2025.

The remaining four daily train services will continue using XPT trains, maintaining existing rail travel options for passengers.

NSW TrainLink is securing a provider through a public tender to ensure wheelchair-accessible coaches are available for these services.

Passengers will gain flexibility in choosing between train and coach travel, depending on their schedules and comfort preferences.

Transport for NSW will release detailed timetable updates before the new coach services begin operation in 2025.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison emphasized the government’s commitment to regional transport improvements.

She stated that the $40 million investment would provide passengers with a safer, more comfortable, and reliable travel experience.

A new regional train fleet was announced over a decade ago, but no new trains have been delivered yet.
