United Kingdom Introduces Digital Technology to Steam Locomotives
16.04.2025
The United Kingdom has launched ETCS system trials on the Tornado steam locomotive as part of digitalization and railway heritage preservation projects, merging modern technology with historic transport. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

United Kingdom Modernizes Railway Heritage
The trials are part of the East Coast Digital Programme and the Heritage Rail project, which aim to expand tourist train services powered by steam and diesel. These routes contribute over £600 million ($750 million) to the economy annually.

The Tornado locomotive was equipped with ETCS digital onboard equipment developed by Hitachi Rail. Network Rail oversaw the project, while engineering implementation was handled by AtkinsRealis.
Engineers tackled several challenges, including power supply, brake control, and reliable performance under high vibration, noise, and dust conditions. The system also had to function effectively in both directions.
United Kingdom Expands Opportunities for Heritage Trains
The Cambrian Line was selected for testing—it was the first railway in the country to implement ETCS back in 2011. This route provided ideal conditions to assess the system’s efficiency under demanding scenarios.
In 2025, the diesel locomotive Class 55 Royal Scots Grey will undergo similar trials on the same line. These tests will evaluate how heritage trains can be integrated into modern railway infrastructure.
To enable full operation on lines equipped with ETCS Level 2, engineers are analyzing trial results, correcting deficiencies, and adapting the system to meet mainline requirements.
Thus, the United Kingdom showcases how innovation and tradition can work together to turn historical trains into an integral part of the country’s digital future.
