Witnesses said the crossing arms were lowered, lights flashed, and the train horn sounded moments before the collision. Despite the active signals, the cyclist continued into the path of the oncoming train.

The police have not yet identified the deceased. Investigators are actively working to confirm his identity and notify the next of kin. The intersection was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

Amtrak Train Delay and Safety Warning Issued

According to an official Amtrak train statement, Train 5 was traveling from Chicago to the San Francisco Bay Area when it encountered a trespasser around 12:25 a.m. Central Time on BNSF Railway tracks east of Lincoln. None of the 246 passengers or crew members were injured, and the train resumed its westbound route after a three-hour delay.

Public Information Officer Erika Thomas reminded the public to stay alert near rail crossings. “Warning signals are there to protect lives. Ignoring them can be deadly,” she stated.

This fatality marks the second train-related death in Lincoln within a week, raising renewed concern about pedestrian safety at rail crossings. Police may coordinate with transportation authorities on enhanced public education efforts to reduce future incidents.

FAQ

What happens if an Amtrak train hits someone at a crossing?

Authorities launch an investigation, and trains often face significant delays while emergency crews respond and gather evidence.

Can you cross tracks if the Amtrak train warning lights are flashing?

No. Flashing lights, lowered gates, and horns mean a train is approaching. Crossing at that time is illegal and extremely dangerous.

How long are Amtrak train services delayed after accidents?

Delays vary, but trains can be held for several hours, especially when fatalities or investigations are involved. In this case, the delay lasted three hours.
