UK family rail deals are reducing child fares to as little as £1, while publicly owned operators add discounted tickets and attraction offers for summer 2026.

The Department for Transport⁠ announced the package on 23 July as part of its Great British Summer Savings campaign. It said discounts are available across all publicly owned railway services, following the first freeze in rail fares for 30 years and ahead of Great British Railways being established in 2027.

Child fares start at £1 on public rail services

Southeastern’s Kids for a Quid⁠ offer lets one adult with a valid ticket take up to four children aged 5–15 for £1 each during off-peak travel. Children under five travel free. The offer runs year-round, although it excludes journeys made entirely within London Zones 1–9 and cannot be further reduced with a Railcard.

Children can also travel for £2 return on c2c services⁠ at weekends and during school holidays, with the same headline price available on Govia Thameslink Railway services. Greater Anglia is offering selected £2 child tickets.

For larger groups, LNER and Northern advertise family tickets for up to two adults and four children, with average savings of 77%. West Midlands Trains is offering family travel from Birmingham to London for as little as £22.

Beach tickets and attraction offers widen the package

TransPennine Express is distributing a free All Aboard educational activity book for younger passengers. Rail customers can also access two-for-one admission to Scarborough Castle and one-third discounts at Edinburgh Dungeon and Legoland Discovery Centre Manchester.

The package extends beyond child fares. c2c has set a £15 adult off-peak return from any of its stations in the London Travelcard area to Southend between 21 July and 31 August.

Alongside the rail promotions, children can travel free on buses during August. The government also plans to cap single bus fares at £2 across England outside London from January 2027.

These are operator-specific promotions rather than one national rail fare, so eligible routes, travel times and accompanying-adult requirements vary. Families should check the relevant operator’s conditions before booking.
