The first train, Unit 555021, debuted during the 11:04 Pelaw-Monkseaton service via Newcastle city centre. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, present at the launch, hailed it as a “historic day.” She praised Nexus and Stadler for their collaborative efforts to deliver the train swiftly.

Passenger-Centered Features

Passenger feedback influenced the Class 555 design, with over 23,000 responses shaping its innovative features. The trains include linear seating, USB charging ports, climate control, and digital CCTV cameras. Accessibility enhancements, such as sliding steps for level boarding, further elevate passenger experience.

The Class 555 trains replace aging Metrocars dating back to the Metro’s 1980 inception. These modern units debuted at South Gosforth depot in March 2023. Nexus plans a phased rollout, with all 46 trains operational by 2026.

A New Era for Public Transit

Cathy Massarella, Managing Director of Nexus, emphasized the significance of this launch. She called it the beginning of a new era for Tyne and Wear Metro. These trains promise improved convenience, comfort, and reliability for passengers across the region.

By 2026, the Tyne and Wear Metro network will be fully transformed, offering a world-class transit experience. This milestone reflects a commitment to modernizing urban mobility while meeting passengers’ evolving needs.
