Transit Briefs: Updates on Honolulu Skyline and NC By Train Growth
09.01.2025
Transit Briefs highlight significant developments in public transit, including Honolulu’s Skyline expansion and NC By Train’s record-breaking ridership in 2024. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Skyline Expansion Underway in Honolulu
Transit Briefs reveal Skyline’s temporary shutdown to accommodate critical updates for its second operating segment. The project connects 11 miles of current tracks to 5.2 miles of new extensions.
Temporary closures are scheduled for January 11-12 and January 18-19, during which shuttle buses will operate between stations. The system will reopen January 13 and 20, resuming regular service.
Four new stations—Makalapa, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Ahua, and Kahauiki—will connect key areas, including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Construction is on track for early 2025 completion.
With core systems installations in progress and train testing underway, Skyline’s upgraded system aims for asset transfer to the Department of Transportation Services by late 2025.
NC By Train Achieves Record Ridership
Transit Briefs also celebrate NC By Train’s unprecedented growth in 2024, surpassing 720,000 riders—a 12% increase from 2023. Enhanced schedules and events drove this remarkable success.
Expanded routes between Raleigh and Charlotte, coupled with new initiatives like the NC Ale Trail by Rail, contributed to the rising popularity of the service. Officials plan further expansion to meet demand.
The Future of Public Transit Innovation
Transit Briefs showcase Honolulu and North Carolina as leaders in sustainable transit. Skyline’s autonomous rail expansion and NC By Train’s passenger growth highlight rail’s potential in modern urban travel.
