TrainScanner improves the accuracy of train inspections in Italy
17.11.2025
TrainScanner helps Trenord cut the time needed for train diagnostics because it continuously monitors key components and automatically sends alerts to maintenance teams whenever it detects something out of line.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

TrainScanner and new possibilities for real-time train diagnostics
TrainScanner now operates at three Trenord depots and uses high-resolution cameras, AI and machine vision to assess each train as it rolls through the portal, so the operator receives inspection results within seconds. As reported by Railway Gazette International, the technology is designed specifically for automatic inspection of external components during normal movements in and out of the depot.

The system checks multiple components automatically, and it tracks a broad range of elements that are critical for safe operation. At the Novate Milanese depot, TrainScanner can inspect up to 1,600 wheels and brake units a day, as well as around one hundred pantographs, enabling teams to spot deviations before they affect service.
TrainScanner in Trenord’s evolving maintenance infrastructure
Trenord plans to install TrainScanner at two more depots, and the operator is gradually expanding the role of automated diagnostics in its wider maintenance network, which already includes several major plants across Lombardy, as outlined on the company’s official page about Trenord maintenance facilities. These tools speed up inspections because they collect data without extra manual work and send targeted alerts to engineers who can then focus on the components that really need attention.
MerMec introduced TrainScanner to the wider rail market at the Expo Ferroviaria trade fair in Milan in October, a key industry event documented in the organiser’s own EXPO Ferroviaria 2025 press material, and the technology moved quickly from the exhibition stand into daily operations.
Trenord already uses the system in routine depot workflows, and, as one depot manager might put it, “we finally see the problems coming toward us instead of waiting for them to happen.”
