Train Derailment in Alberta: Key Findings and Safety Measures
23.01.2025
A 2022 train derailment in Alberta revealed critical safety issues involving deteriorated track conditions. Investigators shared key findings, causes, and steps taken to address similar risks. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

What Caused the Alberta Train Derailment?
The derailment occurred on July 13, 2022, near Bassano, when 41 hopper cars derailed. Of these, 39 cars spilled grain, though no dangerous goods were involved, and no injuries occurred.

Investigators determined that deteriorating track conditions reduced lateral stability, increasing susceptibility to buckling. Compressive forces accumulated significantly due to heavy, long trains and rising traffic volume.
Dynamic forces from train movement further weakened the track’s resistance. Despite earlier maintenance efforts, the track alignment failed, leading to the derailment.
CP Rail’s Response to the Train Derailment
Following the derailment, CP Rail initiated a track renewal program to improve safety standards. Monthly route safety evaluations and enhanced training programs for supervisors were also implemented.
These measures aim to prevent incidents like the 2022 train derailment by addressing structural and operational issues. Continuous inspections remain essential for ensuring railway stability.
