This advanced system, known as the European Train Control System (ETCS), delivers continuous real-time data to drivers, allowing trains to run closer together without compromising safety. As a result, it supports more frequent service with fewer delays.

Unlike traditional signals, ETCS provides dynamic updates on speed and braking directly inside the driver’s cab. This upgrade increases control, reduces congestion, and enhances performance across the network.

Digital signalling technology enables faster recovery after disruptions, cuts down on maintenance issues, and lessens the need for engineering interventions. These benefits help ensure more consistent and dependable rail services.

The installation work will be carried out at Siemens Mobility’s Ardwick depot in partnership with Eversholt Rail, the owner of the Class 185 units. Planning is underway, though operational launch timing will be confirmed later.

Digital Signalling Technology to Strengthen Regional Rail

The upgrade is a vital component of the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), which aims to improve rail links between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York. In March 2025, the UK government pledged an additional £415 million to accelerate the project.

This funding will directly support the implementation of digital signalling technology, reinforcing the commitment to smarter infrastructure and better rail experiences for passengers.

Industry Leaders Back Digital Signalling Technology Rollout

Chris Nutton, Director of TRU and Major Projects at TPE, stated the technology will modernize operations and support broader connectivity goals. He praised the collaboration with Siemens Mobility and Eversholt Rail.

Sambit Banerjee of Siemens Mobility added that the project reflects their mission to transform travel. Paul Sutherland from Eversholt Rail emphasized their role in delivering an efficient and future-ready network.

This digital upgrade positions TPE at the forefront of UK rail innovation while preparing its fleet for the challenges of tomorrow’s transport demands.
