Town Hall Station Bolsters Melbourne’s City Linkages

The Town Hall Station is located under the street between Collins and Flinders Streets, connecting directly to Flinders Street Station via pedestrian underpasses. As a result of this interchange, commuters have the opportunity of changing between City Loop lines and Metro Tunnel lines without getting off.

The new station has three primary entrances — at Federation Square, City Square, and the Town Hall Place development next to Young and Jackson. Each entrance was planned for easy usability and visual effect, complementing Melbourne’s vision for holistic urban transport.

Displaying Design, Culture, and Innovation at the Town Hall Station

A large underground concourse beneath City Square has high, columnar trees which represent movement and growth. At the entrance of the Federation Square, a painting accomplished by Maree Clarke named Barerarerungar promotes Indigenous culture and reinforces Melbourne’s artistic culture.

Under ground, the station features a special trinocular tunnel structure creating cathedral-type arches with high ceilings of 10 metres. Locally-manufactured chandelier lights line the platforms, echoing Melbourne’s local manufacturing flair for sustainability.

Construction began in 2017, necessitating excavation of a five-storey building volume. Engineers gracefully navigated safety, economy, and urban disruption minimizations. Now, years after planning, the work is poised to remake downtown travel.

When open, Town Hall Station will reduce congestion, shorten travel time, and enhance inter- metropolitan connections. The Metro Tunnel project reflects the value of strategic infrastructure spend, changing urban mobility for the better and everyday life for the better too.
