64-kilometer Brenner Tunnel will become the world’s longest railway tunnel, when completed. Webuild has won a $ 1.3 billion contract to build an extension to the Brenner Base Tunnel.

A consortium led by Webuild Group has won a $ 1.30 billion (€ 1.07 billion) contract to design and build a high-capacity rail section running from the Brenner base tunnel between Fortezza and Ponte Gardena in Italy, informs Railway Supply  magazine citing Webuild Group.

The 22.5 km expansion project was commissioned by the state-owned rail operator Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). Another member of the consortium is the Swiss engineering firm Implenia.

Most of the work will be done underground, including connections at Ponte Gardena. When completed, the 64-kilometer Brenner Tunnel will become the longest railroad tunnel in the world.

This tunnel will provide a link between Verona (Italy) and Munich (Germany) via Innsbruck (Austria).

The project will significantly increase the capacity of the Verona-Fortezza line along the Munich-Verona railway corridor, reducing travel times for both passenger and freight trains.
