Tickets Give Budget-Friendly Option to Access Colorado Mountain Slopes

The Amtrak Winter Park Express returns on December 19, linking Denver Union Station with the Winter Park Resort. The seasonal “ski train” operates Fridays through Sundays until January 4, then shifts to a Thursday-to-Sunday schedule through March 29.

Travelers can book tickets directly at Amtrak.com/winter-park-express. Each trip departs Denver at 7:00 a.m. and arrives at Winter Park Resort at 9:11 a.m. and Fraser at 9:41 a.m. Return trains leave Fraser at 4:05 p.m. and Winter Park at 4:35 p.m., reaching Denver by 7:05 p.m.

Amtrak allows passengers to carry skis and snowboards onboard at no extra cost. Because the train eliminates parking stress and highway delays, it continues to attract both locals and tourists seeking a smooth mountain getaway.

Tickets Reflect State Support for Lower Fares and Expansion

Colorado’s $3-per-day rental-car fee, introduced in 2024, helps subsidize ticket prices. As a result, one-way fares start at $9 for adults and $4.50 for children under 12. Officials say these lower prices have encouraged more families and first-time riders to travel by rail.

The Winter Park Express now operates four days a week, an expansion that helped double ridership last season. This success has strengthened state confidence in passenger-rail development along the U.S. Highway 40 corridor.

Colorado’s next major step includes launching a new rail link between Denver and Granby by November 2026, modeled after the Winter Park Express. The long-term plan envisions connecting Steamboat Springs, Craig, and Yampa Valley, creating an extended network of mountain passenger services.

Earlier this year, the state secured a 25-year agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to operate passenger trains on its freight tracks without usage fees. This partnership ensures cost efficiency and lays the groundwork for sustained rail expansion across northwest Colorado.

Amtrak’s collaboration with state leaders highlights growing investment in sustainable mobility. Because the Winter Park Express blends convenience, affordability, and environmental responsibility, it represents a model for future rail initiatives nationwide.
