New Railway Project in Tibet

China Railways (CR) has established Xinjiang — Xizang Railway with headquarters in Lhasa. The company will act as both the operator and builder of the line connecting Hotan to Lhasa via Shigatse.

CR is the sole corporate shareholder, investing $13.22 billion in the authorized capital. Major construction work is set to begin by the end of 2025, as the project is included in China’s list of 45 largest transport initiatives.

This line will be the third railway leading to Tibet. The Qinghai — Xizang line is already operational, while construction of the Sichuan — Xizang railway continues. Authorities also plan routes connecting the region with Gansu and Yunnan provinces.

Economic and Strategic Importance for Tibet

The new railway will increase both freight and passenger transport volumes. It will lower logistics costs, create jobs, and open access to new markets for Tibetan producers.

Experts note that the railway will enhance the region’s investment appeal. Tourism is also expected to benefit, as improved transport accessibility will attract more visitors.
