The first X-Wagen metro train from Siemens Mobility has been launched in Vienna
20.06.2023
This six-car train has started operating on the U3 line. By the end of the year, there will be a total of 10 trains of this type on this route, replacing the U-Wagen trains that have been in service since 1972, according to the railway portal Railway Supply, citing Siemens Mobility.
The manufacturer claims that the X-Wagen can operate both with a driver and in fully autonomous mode.
As a result, a portion of the ordered trains for Vienna will be used on an automated line that is planned to open in 2026.

The contract for the supply and maintenance of 34 trains, with the possibility of an additional order for 11 units, was signed in 2017.
Each train can accommodate 928 passengers, and its maximum operating speed is 80 km/h.
The X-Wagen train is the first to be equipped with an electronic braking system, which is controlled by an electronic signal transmitted from the control unit to the brake actuator. It is claimed that the use of this system reduces the train’s readiness time from 12 to 4 minutes.
