The Eastern Freight Corridor of Indian Railways is now open
06.11.2023
India’s Eastern Freight corridor, spanning 1,337km, officially began commercial operations on November 1st, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This major achievement was announced by Mr. R K Jain, the managing director of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, in October 2023.
Construction has commenced on the Rail Baltica Ülemiste passenger terminal in Tallinn, Estonia
With an investment of Rs 550 billion (approximately $US 6.6 billion) from the World Bank, this corridor has the capacity for up to 250 trains per day, significantly increasing the transportation of coal to power stations in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana states.
This development is a vital step in reducing freight journey times and marks the beginning of a series of planned freight corridors in India, including the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, set to become one of the country’s busiest routes in the coming years.
The Eastern Freight corridor’s completion is a monumental achievement for Indian Railways, as it marks the culmination of a project that has been in the works for over a decade.
The increased capacity and efficiency it brings to the transportation of coal and other goods are expected to have a significant impact on the regions it serves, improving logistics and reducing costs.
Looking ahead, India’s ambitious plans for the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor signal the country’s commitment to further enhancing its freight transportation infrastructure.
This corridor, connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai, has the potential to become a critical trade route, with projections of handling over 280 million tonnes of cargo in the next decade.
The successful launch of the Eastern Freight corridor and the ongoing development of its Western counterpart demonstrate India’s dedication to modernizing its rail network, fostering economic growth, and improving the overall efficiency of goods transportation in the country.
These advancements are a testament to India’s continuous progress in the field of rail logistics and its commitment to meeting the growing demands of its economy.
