The CAF hydrogen train traveled 804 km without refueling
06.03.2024
The CAF hydrogen train demonstrated excellent performance, covering 804 km of route without the need for refueling, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This three-car train successfully traveled from north to south of Spain, starting its route in Madrid and passing through cities such as Talavera de la Reina, Monfragüe, Cáceres, and finishing its journey in Mérida.
The Euro9000 locomotive has been acquired by the German carrier HSL Logistik
It is important to note that even after covering this distance, the train did not deplete its entire hydrogen supply, indicating the high efficiency of this transportation vehicle.
Up to this point, information about the range of the train had not been disclosed, making this result even more impressive.
The implementation project of the hydrogen train is valued at €14 million and is carried out by the FCH2Rail consortium, which includes major companies such as CAF, the national carrier Renfe, Adif, and others.
The main goal of this project is to research and develop technologies capable of making rail transport more environmentally friendly and efficient.
The hybrid engine with hydrogen fuel cells installed on the CAF Civia 463 electric train, developed in collaboration with Toyota, is a key element of this project.
Testing of the machine began in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed by December, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of its performance in various climatic and operational conditions in Spain.
Recently, a virtual model of the train was published on the FCH2Rail website, presented in 3D format.
This model allows examination of the exterior of the train, the driver’s cabin, the interior, the roof with hydrogen fuel cells and pantograph, as well as the power unit located between the carriages.
This is an important step in advancing the project and attracting attention to innovative technologies in the field of railway transport.
