Tesla plans to switch to operating battery-electric trains from the Mireo Smart family, manufactured by Siemens, replacing diesel trains currently transporting employees to their factory near Berlin. This transition is scheduled for summer 2024, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Tesla is transitioning to environmentally friendly trains

The trains will be leased from the newly established leasing company, Smart Train Lease, founded by Siemens in early 2024. The operation of the trains will continue to be managed by the passenger transport operator Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB).

Currently, Tesla uses two diesel trains to transport employees, which have been running on an unelectrified line between the Erkner terminus of the S3 line of the Berlin suburban railway (S-Bahn) and the Fangschleuse station at Tesla’s factory since September 2023. These trains transport approximately 3,500 passengers daily, and the fare is free for all passengers.

The new Mireo Smart train was introduced in November 2023. It offers an economical option for regional trains, featuring several standard configurations and limited options.

The transition to battery-electric trains will require some downtime to prepare the infrastructure and adapt it for the new trains. This downtime is necessary for preparatory work.

Switching to battery-electric trains from diesel ones is a significant step towards greening transportation. Electric trains do not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere, aligning with Tesla’s overall strategy to reduce carbon footprint and adopt sustainable transport solutions. It also supports broader European trends aimed at reducing dependency on fossil fuels and transitioning to cleaner transportation modes.

Moreover, transitioning to battery-electric trains will help reduce operational costs, as electric trains require less fuel and maintenance compared to diesel ones. This decision is advantageous not only environmentally but also economically.

Tesla’s move demonstrates a commitment to integrating advanced technologies and sustainable solutions into the transport system. It sets an example for other companies to follow, encouraging the adoption of more environmentally friendly and efficient transportation vehicles.

In conclusion, Tesla is not only strengthening its position in the automotive and energy sectors but also making a significant contribution to the development of sustainable transport.
